Home construction in the Austin area slowed in the third quarter, with builders starting construction on about 5 percent fewer homes than in the year-ago quarter, according to new industry data. Starts also were down on an annual basis. Metro study said there were 16,396 starts in the 12 months that ended in September, down 3.2 percent from the comparable 12-month period, when starts numbered 16,943. The figures include single family homes, townhomes and condominiums. One reason starts are slowing is because developers are unable to deliver enough available lots to build on, said Vaike O’Grady, Metro study’s Austin regional director.
