Under the proposed budget in Austin for next year, the typical Austin homeowner will get a break on city property taxes — but will pay more in utility rates and user fees. Although property valuations in Austin increased from last year, the city estimates the typical owner will pay $110 less in city property taxes, the result of the City Council increasing the impact of homestead exemptions. Also, under state law the city can increase property tax revenue by only 3.5% without voter approval to go higher.
