It’s a confusing job market in Austin. Sizeable layoffs are happening, but other companies are in expansion mode. Tech giants with large Austin presences, including Google, Facebook parent company Meta, Austin based Tesla, and Round Rock-based Dell Technologies, have all laid off thousands of employees since late last year. That’s the downside. The flip side is that Austin’s unemployment rate stands at about 3%, compared to 3.6% nationally. Austin added 71,000 jobs, a growth of 5.8%, in the 12 months ending in January, making it the third-best performing among the top 50 metros, according to the Austin Chamber of Commerce.
